The 4P’s Radio Training Course

The 4PS Radio Training Course is designed to help people build confidence and communication using radio as a form of therapy. The method is tried and tested and works on people of all ages and abilities The idea is to communicate better using radio which in turn builds confidence and communication skills whilst using the main 4 ingredients of radio.

Presenting, Producing, Podcasting and Promoting, All in that order

The success we have had is phenomenal people of all ages with low self-esteem and communication problems and people with learning difficulties and speech problems have all benefited most have gone on to become presenters and all have better communication skills and grown in confidence.
The Vectis radio training school was set up in 2013 piloted by three teenage girls from Christ the King College, The school was asked by the Isle of Wight Council to provide services for 11 to 19 years of age and up to 25 with additional needs up to August 2016 the system put in place has helped in excess of 60 children improve confidence levels and communication skills you can see for yourself by checking out the student pages at WWW.4PS.Org.uk

The course is also for youngsters that have an interest in radio/media to either improve their chances of a job in the industry or to find out whether or not they would like to pursue it as a career.

Vectis Radio

The aim of Vectis Radio is to involve the community as much as possible in the operation of the station by promoting local events, charities and businesses and by giving opportunities to anyone interested to broadcast their own show regardless of age or ability. The station has been operating since 2010 and has a strong bond with the community. Children from all over the island have already undertaken work experience at the station, including pupils from Carisbrooke, St Georges, Medina, St Catherines, Christ the king College, the IW College and Ryde Academy. Vectis Radio extends its community support and involvement by offering the 4P course to all Island schools and also 11 to 19 year olds not in education.

Where Are We
The Vectis Radio studio is situated within the Riverside Centre in Newport PO302QR and has access to the facilities the Riverside Centre offers to support the delivery of the 4Ps Training Course.
Course Structure and Content
The course will aim to introduce students to the following areas as well as enabling them to develop relevant practical skills in respect of each of the following:

Programming
– Music (explaining and working with Genres, Decades and Styles)
– News (collation and presentation)
– Shows (types of shows, including chat shows, music based shows, debates etc)
– Weather
– Playlists
– Awareness of appropriate legal requirements

Presenting Skills
How to put together your own show, including the following:
– How to use a microphone Properly
– How to Record and present links
– How to plan, promote, record and produce a radio show
– How to conduct an Interview
– How to do all the above so that it fits with the Stations style guide.

How to write and produce and edit the following
– Commercials

Session 1

An introduction to radio both on and off air

you will be interviewed on air, The interview is then edited podcast and placed onto the website

A topic of debate will be chosen and students will then write, voice, record and produce a 30 Second promo for a debate that will happen in the coming weeks. This may also lead to designing a leaflet/poster to promote on social media.

Write and record first news bulletin

Begin planning the sessions ahead a Documentary, Top 5, Tourism Packages, promos and The 4Ps packages

Session 2

Students will also start to put together a top five favourite songs, Recording and producing six links either side of each song chosen.

Start planning a documentary with music and interviews that will consist of three sections totalling 52 minutes which will fit into an hours programming. Subjects could be how the Isle of Wight’s waste is collected, The IW Steam Railway, Eviivo, or something else

Research the lunchtime social debate the topic of choice and promote on Facebook.

Record and produce your top five and podcast.

Session 4

Work on documentary

Conduct an interview with the on air presenter in a feature called ask me anything which is then edited and podcast it and put onto the website
Session 5

Produce weekend news, roundup of the week’s news or produce a sports package of sporting events happening this weekend on the Isle of Wight

Students will work on developing a one hour radio show which has six speech links in using Adobe audition and StationPlaylist programming.

The Tutor

The sessions will be primarily delivered by the Director of Vectis Radio, Ian Mac.
Ian has been in the entertainment industry since 1981 working both in the UK and abroad. Ian has worked specifically in the Radio industry since 1992 as a broadcaster/presenter, producer, and newsreader etc. He previously worked with Radio Victory, Cowes Week Radio, Isle of Wight Radio and Wight FM before setting up Vectis Radio in 2009.
Ian will be supported in delivering the course by other members of the Vectis Radio team.
Ian has developed the idea of the 4P’s course as a means of passing on his extensive knowledge and experience to young people and hopes that the 4P course will not just enable those who undertake it to develop specific broadcasting industry skills but also help more widely in enabling participants to develop their confidence and self esteem as they move into their working careers.
